Toba Caldera Geopark
After a wait of nine years, the Toba caldera was finally named a UNESCO Global Geopark during the United Nations cultural body's 209th plenary session held in Paris in 2020. According to a statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Paris, the Toba caldera was among the 16 new UNESCO Global Geoparks announced by the organization's executive board.


TCG bordered by coordinate 2°52’22.8”N 98°35’21.4”E - 3°00’22.8”N 98°35’21.4”E and 2°10’18.7”N 98°52’26.5”E - 2°25’26.8”N 99°23’04.0”E, located in the the region of North Sumatra Province, about 176 km west of Medan. Medan is the capital of North Sumatra Province. The landscape of TCG is as the result of a volcanic massive explosive volcanic eruption which formed caldera. The basin of the caldera filled with water forming a lake which occupies 90 x 30 km2. In the middle of the lake is an island, called Samosir Island. Lake Toba which is 505 m of depth, and located at 904 m asl of height is the largest lake in Indonesia. The topography of area around the lake is wave hills (43%), mountains (30%), and plain (27%). The surface elevation is about 2,000 m asl. Settlements occupy the plains, where they practice their daily activities. The caldera wall which is commonly steep slopes becomes watershed.
